Yorkville is a district in the upper East Side — calm and mostly residential area. Population density here is one of the highest in New York. It appeared in Manhattan thanks to the immigrants. Czech and German immigrants have captivated these areas since 1840s. By the beginning of the XX century the district was replete with migrants from Europe: Irish, Germans, Austrians, Hungarians, Jews, Czechs, Slovaks and Italians. Mansions with more than two stories were almost nonexistent. With the changes of conditions (above all — dismantling of a trestle railway) came changes of ethnic composition of the residents. The district gradually lost its national character created by old timers. Couple of decades ago all residents were practically relocated to the high-rise housing. It’s worth saying that Yorkville is a quite comfortable and relatively inexpensive district that’s becoming more attractive as the years go by. One of its cons until recently was a difficult access to the subway, but as of now the new underground line is being constructed that will resolve this issue. The main attraction of the district is a park on a waterfront that houses the residence of New York mayor and a couple of museums. The US President Barak Obama resided here in his time.
